i know that isnt pointed at me but in another thread before this was made they were arguing about it

maybe its wrong to say that they dont need one but by the sounds of it he fully knows that they should as he has defended them and put it up here just to prove his point cause he knows EVERYONE will back him up and gives him the satisfaction

got nothing to do with satisfaction or braggin rights, merely pionting out that he does need one.

he told me he KNOWS they dont. that is the only reason i started the thread.

Basically unless you really cant afford a stat (24.99 on ebay) then use one, its much safer.

The shop here also supplies full kits including heat mat but no stat, the advice they give is that yes there safer to have one, but not necessary.

i guess to each there own.

roll on more bitching
If you can't afford a stat then you can not afford to provide the animal you intend to own a safe environment in which to live. With reptiles, a correct heat gradient is as important as food and water.

Shops sell INcomplete (i.e. NOT FULL (if they were they would have a stat)) starter kits in order to get more sales (the stat usually takes the price over the £100 mark which is a physcological barrier to potential purchasers.

It is not 'each to their own', it is all about shops giving out incorrect advice and becasue they can fill in a few forms and purchase things from a stock list (that is the total 'qualifications' needed to own a reptile shop) people ASSUME that they know what they are talking about.

All you need to do is go and get an old fish tank, a piece of polystyrene and a heat mat. Place mat between poly and tank and give it a couple of hours or so. If you can comfortably hold your hand flat on the glass above the mat indefinitely then I will take back the above.....bet you can't!

Stats should be mandatory. full stop.

Cheers

Andy

Thing is there not even that much...if your really having trouble affording one then a plant propergator thermostate will do....they sell them for £8.25 at stapley water gardens....there not the brillant...and take hours of calibrating to get them right...and you also need to build it from scratch out the box....but it does the job if your that short of cash.

personally i think thats no excuse for not having one.
even if your heatmat is one in a million and does give the correct basking temps of say 85....then what happens when your room gets hot or cold, theres nothing to control it so it works with your room temperature

I must have some rubbish heat mats - they struggle to reach 80 - they are on stats, but don't seem to need to cos the mats don't get that high - still use the stat though just in case

I agree stats are important. Our local pet shop sells snake/lizard starter kits for £60 and they include heat mat and stat ok dont include the snake but still I think £60 for the basic baby snake set up is a great deal personally.
