I personally use stats....always have done and always will....

just for people that think you dont need to use one, go to your local reptile vet and ask for last weeks appiotments reports....working closey with my vet who is also a good friend of mine, ive seen alot of lizards, snakes and even cooked scorpions, while there.
I[ts the same argument with sand impaction, you may have never had a problem with your lizard ingesting it but my vet deals with a minium of 10 cases week of it.

The thing is weather you think you know how hot your heating device can get, its man made and anything and everything has faults, glitches and failures. a thermostat and help stop this and yes a thermostat can also break.but at least you have done extra measures to try ensure your devices are being controled

Your memory seems to be playing tricks however since I have not killed anything.

Someone who freezes sick animals and advocates not using thermostats calling someone else stupid does seem a little hypocritical don't you think ?

i should also point out that from a few posts on this thread i see that some people use pads inside thier setups, ie the snakes actually contact the pad....? iv never used that setup, my pads are always below a cage, outside a tub, so the heat is diffused by whatever method, 15mm ply, gap, acrylic, glass blah blah i use, i cant comment on uncontrolled pad surface temps as i calibrate from the snakes point of view, ie where it will seek heat. im not sure why anyone would put a pad inside a setup, presumably with the probe too? where i use stats the probe is again outside the setup between the pad and poly level, but theres more than one way to do it, one of the most essential tools is a good digital thermometer, dont guess, dont use ur hand, be sure.

again, there is more than one way to setup ur viv/boxes etc, do whats best for ur situation and above all, calibrate and record.

I would go with the general view of its better to be safe than sorry! I dont think i would evr like to take much of a chance of harming my animals - since as said before some can litterally cook.

As for the euthenasia issue i really dont think freezing is the best way as for reptiles they go into a 'sleep' but they can still feel every bit freezing - making it very painful!!
