We have bought a CB07 cornsnake with setup tonight. We wanted to check everything was set up ok. It has 2 hides one with moss in, waterbowl, and a red lightbulb which we have been told to leave on all the time???
We want to make sure it is right and if it isn't we can change it asap. Many, many thanks in advance.

well in my opinion i would take out the red light and put a tub UV in that doesnt get very hot and switch it off when you go to bed then switch it on when you wake up to give the snake a sense of day and night

If your using a bulb then it needs to be guarded in some way. The way you choose to heat it is up to you but you need to try and achieve a temperature gradient, warm end of approx 30C and cool end approx 20C. Hides are good but you dont need to have a hide full of moss available at all time like you do with lizards, only put damp moss in when the snake is going into shed until they have shed then remove it again.
Edited to add, you already answered the bulb guard thing while I was typing

? Why the hell would you put a UV for a Corn Snake? You'd need a energy-saving bulb at most to keep on during the day but not necessary. Honestly mate, a UVB for a CORN SNAKE. Lighting at all is not necessary for corn snakes! A mat on a stat, or ceramic heater (with guard & stat) is all that'ds needed. Although the red bulb is fine aslong as guarded & statted. Good luck with this guys, hope to see pics! |

cool if its got a stat and guard then you know your safe
I take it you are using the bulb for heat , if so then dont take it out and put in a uv for one corn snakes are nocturnal and dont need uv and for another the red bulb is its heat, You can leave the bulb on all the time I do with mine but some people turn them off at night so they get a night time drop in temp and save electric too you can do that so long as it don't get really cold in your house. You could use a heat mat for heat if you dont want to use the bulb there are endless arguments for each one and really it just comes down to personal choice in the end. good luck with your corn snake sounds like you have every thing you need
