You shouldn't really need a heat lamp AND heat mat at one end AND a heat mat at the other too...

Ideally a heat lamp will suffice.

PLUS...it must have cost a small fortune in thermostats for those three heat sources!

hi ive included a piccy just took of his set up the heat mat is taped to the back of the tank. so would it be advisable to move the heat mat to the cool bit sorry if it looks noobie it's my first one and open to whatever will make him happy.

Nice snake bud and an excellent first choice. I will say though (just to echo everyone else) put the mat under one side of the tank and scrap the light (which 100% definetely needs a guard if you plan on keeping it)

You need a guard over that light asap. Infact...turn it off until you have one.

Where are the stat probes...are you using thermostats?

My mistake before, I thought you meant mat & light on hot side and another mat on the cool end.

I see what you mean now!

To be quite honest, your best bet is to get a faunarium and place the heat mat underneath at one end.

Nah don't have any heat sources in the cool end, need to keep a warm and cold gradient. You'll need a guard for that bulb they have a nasty habit of trying to climb on them and wrapping around them, putting them at risk of burns. Is that a patch of condensation in the cool end corner? Just something else to watch out for(!)

Beautiful snake though best of luck with the new lil 'un

Nope, guards aren't gonna break the bank.. However, you do definitely need a thermostat, you can't be there all the time to make sure the temperatures are correct!!

Question, what are your temps at each end???

I have to agree its an Amel morph and a pretty one too! congrats mate on your first snake... and so begins the addiction I started out with a little butter corn and a normal royal ... I got the bug ( 7 snakes, 2 lizards and a tarantula later).

But i dont like glass tanks for snakes the make it difficult to hold the temp steady Wooden vivs are ideal really (well for me at least!) they hold the temp and humidity and come in a great range of sizes.

make sure your not giving your new corn too much space it can freak them out and they can get a bit lost in vivs that are to big i find that plastic vivs work the best for baby corns as temporary housing while growing them on they dont hold the humitidy as well so need more regular misting but they come in much smaller sizes and are cheap to buy put your heat mat under one end of the tank.

anyway congrats on your pretty new snake, good luck and welcome to RF

There's guards on ebay for £12, if you absolutely have to keep the bulb, but the snake will be fine and dandy with just the heat mat.
A thermostat is different from a thermometer by the way, it connects to the bulb or mat and cuts the power when it reaches a pre-set temp that you want to keep it at, it is important to have mate will stop the heat source getting too hot.

Without sounding spiteful...you should be clued up...it's not a laughing matter. There is a live animal in your responsibility that is at HIGH risk from being burned or cooked due to the lack of guard around that light...nevermind the lack of thermostats.

You need a light guard around the bulb to prevent the snake from reaching it...if it does it will coil around the naked bulb without realising it is extremely hot.

Guards are around £12-20...you can get them on Ebay or from online retailers such as Livefood UK Crickets Locusts Mealworms Reptile supplies mail order etc...

You also need a thermostat on BOTH heat sources. A mat stat for the mat, and a dimming stat for the light.

They're around £20-40 to buy each. With the mat stat being at the lower end, and the dimming at the higher end.
