after you have done the research and descide to buy a cornsnake then these items are what you will require -

a book will be helpful so that you can always go back to it for reference, (but not an essential item)

a viv - to start off with either buy a faunarium or a tupperware container (you will need to drill holes in both ends for ventilation) big enough for the snake to live in and grow in, as the snake gets older you will need to upgrade the size at adult size (4-6ft) will be happy in a 36 inch viv,

A temperature thermostat (has marks on it to turn to correct setting where as a mat stat doesnt so its trial n error but work just as well) these are a MUST as an unstated heat mat will get hotter than required and can cause serious injuries to your snake.,

A heat mat, big enough to cover 1/3 of a viv, if ya buy a 11x23 that will surfice to heat a 36 inch viv,

a water dish, big enough to allow the snake to get into to be able to bathe

two hides one place at hot end and one at cold end, these can be either ready made hides like the exo terra ones or you can use a piece of bark or use a plastics pot (coldslaw, marg, biscuit etc)

Subsrate - you can buy orchid or beech bark chips, aspen, gold chip, or you can use newspaper or kitchen roll (only pratical to use for small enclosures)

A thermometer - either buy 2 so you can have one eithe end to measure hot/cold ends, or buy a in/out digital one that will do both ends,

decorations - you snake will like logs, sticks, plants they will use them to climb and hide,

depending on the size of your corn when you buy it, you will require food, the seller will tell you what size you require,

Last but not least you will require a snake - firstly decide which morph you want, you can buy from a shop but these will usually cost more, or you can search the classifieds(on forums or free ads) and will get a better deal, you can pay between £15 and £500+ depending on the morph

it does just enough to heat a faunarium
or a large matchbox

All of the previously stated...... and

Comittment
Dedication
A knowledge that funds may be required if unfortunately your snake ever needs a vet
And many future hours of pleasurable time to enjoy owning your snake

My dad has a spare Juwel Rekord 70 tank that is around 2' x 1'. Would this be suitable for a snake? He says he will have to secure the top and feeding lid of the tank but I can have if its suitable. What kind of lighting would I need? If i use a heat mat do i need a heat bulb? or just a UV bulb. What wattage??
Thanks again!!

2X1 isn't bad for a young one, but you'll want a larger cage for it when it gets older. Fish tanks also aren't ideal because snakes and lizards don't like it much when you approach them from above... it can be worked with, but I prefer front-opening vivariums or shallow tubs.

You don't NEED lighting for a corn snake. The ambient light in the room, as long as you don't have everything constantly dark and have blackout curtains and all, will be enough. If you're using a heat mat you shouldn't need a heat bulb unless it gets very cold in your house in winter.

I'd avoid UV for corns - there've been a few people who've mentioned that they've had snakes who went blind (Probably the red-eyed morphs, if I had to guess).

my boa tank has a heat mat under it.. its a fish tank type tank... converted lid.. and he doesnt use a mat stat.. it sits ontop of a piece of insulation.. and my snake happily sits ontop of the warm glass (moves apen out the way)

i guess glass disepates the heat more

peace

James

How do you measure and maintain the temperature? What about when the outside temperature goes up?

Just because the snake will sit on the glass does NOT mean that the glass is a safe temperature to sit on. I've seen a snake stick its head into a light bulb cage and get burned, too.
