Default pet shop

about an hour ago i went into my local pet shop for my weekly pinkies and crickets. so as i enters the shop i walked upstairs where the crickets and reptiles are kept anyway i got my crickets and decided to have a look at the reptiles so. i entered the rep room and to my surpprise there was a lot of reps in there which there usually isnt. anyway the first thing i spotted was a normal corn snake about 3.5 foot long housed in a 3 foot cage with not one hide, nothing to climb on,nothing except a saucer filled with water and the best thing about ut is that he was in blue. i carried on walking around and noticed a couple of cali kings that where housed in sufficent sized tanks but again not one hide and just a saucer full of water nothing else. i also spotted some bearded dragons one about 2 foot ish housed in a 3 foot tank at the most. he could barely move. the last thing i saw was a tiny hatchling amel cornsnake housed in 3 foot vivarium with one hide it was huge compared to him. the only thing that seemed to be cared for correctly were the spiders.

i was wondering to save these animals from any more discomfort what do you thing the best thing to do would be. ?

any suggestions would be much appreciated

Your best bet is to speak to the people who work there if you have concerns. You have to give them a chance to justify themselves or correct their mistakes, then if there is no resolution, there is a sticky in general chat (I think) on how to report a shop.

Did you have a polite friendly chat to any of the staff and perhaps suggest that they would be better off with hides?

INot sure what else you would want to do, if they're not in poor health and they have fresh water, things could be a lot worse.

For cage sizes just remember that shops are meant to be very temporary situations. Whether it's reptiles, or other pets, birds, mammals, etc. they are always in different conditions in the shop to what you would keep them in at home, because it's meant to be only for a short period of time.

Aside from no hides, that doesn't sound bad. Snakes go into shed - should they ALWAYS be removed from display in that case?

And I can think of at least ONE good explanation for not having hides in cages - if they're being cleaned/sterilised.

Talk to the shopkeeper.
