I keep all mine on beech chip and they love digging in it even the little ones.
My young female is very hissy but has never attempted to bite. She'll head butt but if that fails she rolls over and plays dead. Really funny to watch.

just bought my first hognose from the shop this afternoon. only hatched in august and was bred by the owner of the shop. he was holding it fine. he said to keep it on aspen..... is there any benefit from using wood chips(this is all new to me)

I use aspen for mine - whichever the snake seems to prefer seems the best way to me. The aspen will hold burrows I've found (mine is the fine stuff) so you get these little holes here and there - unless you're cruel like me and collapse them so they dig some more
Mine is an adult female and she's a really sweet, docile snake. |
