Default Quarenteen again...

something that has been annoying the hell out of me recently...

How many adverts do you see..

"will breed for you this season"

or similar..

Endless conversations with people about the (spider/pastel,new female etc etc) they are getting and how it's going to breed for them this year...

QUARENTEEN PEOPLE!!

Do you *really* want to be the kind of "breeder" who doesn't QT, one major problem in your collection (or even minor) and it's game over, people won't buy from you anymore.

do you really want to sell sub standard snakes that are a potential heath risk to your collection and other people collections?

I know of many members on this forum who are still buying animals now with the intention to breed them "this season".

Really?

How will that be possible given that you shouldn't be letting them anywhere near your snakes for at least 3-6 months?

It's amazing how many threads make me think "i'll never buy from you".

The amount of people who give this no consideration at all baffles me.

To those people I will say this:

you only need to break a reputation once. You generally get no second chances.

Practices like this WILL cause you problems one day. It shows a complete lack of concern for your animals welfare, why bother (as most people do) to try and get husbandry etc correct if you are just going to throw in a snake you know nothing about, a snake that could have one of hundreds of problems that you CANT see.

Sorry and rant over.

My God I totally agree!! I have been thinking about posting this kind of rant up numerous times, or replying to peoples threads bout it it, but always thought there was no point as it would just cause arguments.

Dude, I so agree with you!!

Plenty of people see the risk of not quarantining worthwhile just to be able to stick their new YB to their Pastel etc and it's mental, you are gonna get caught out sooner or later.

I have a mate who bought a snake from a shop with crypto, he quarantines his snakes anyway luckily but now that people know he 'had' a snake with it, next to nobody will buy from him this coming season, like him it only takes one thing and people will steer clear.

The amount of people who don't quarantine is mental though, not just people who are looking to breed, just people who buy something new and introduce it straight away, makes me wonder how diseases and infections aren't more widespread than they are.

out with anger in with love dude.

besides it matters not that we preach good solid pracises (sorry for the spelling) because it seems no-one really cares until they get their first case of mites. THEN it becomes important to quarentine

I understand what your saying but not everyone has a big enough house to keep new reptiles far enough apart to make it worth it. I once bought a snake and kept it as far away from my collection as possible but it had mites i was very hygenic but they still got to my collection just lucky i caught it in time.

If someone lives in a bed sit and has one reptile are you saying they can't ever get another reptile just cause they can't provide a seperate totaly seperate sealed room?

Only thing to point out on this one, is the term "will breed this season" that doesn't automatically mean, someone will breed straight away(or this season), i would take that as an indication of size and maturity only, and nothing more, reading anything else into that is just assumption

It's hard enough keeping a clean house with four kids and my collection as it is without getting a bigger place and more to clean.

No thats not the case at all, apart from snakes that are being quarantined all my animals are kept in the one room, I am lucky enough to have a seperate room (converted loft with air con) that is as secure and sealed as I could possibly get without building a lab, but what is being said is, don't buy something and be lax on quarantine, stick them at opposite ends of the room and do everything you can to limit the interaction, if you try your best and something still gets through then there is nothing else you can do but try and fix the problem.

Thats how I see it too. Doing whatever is possible to quarentine is what is required. Buying a snake and pairing it up straight away is pure ludicrousy.

P.S. Young Gun, love your sig, made me reallly chuckle!
