It also is to do with you coming in 'from above' they may be suffering a bit of 'oh my god its gonna eat me' fear. try putting your hand in as far away from the snake and move along the bottom and gently scoop it up. i managed to pick up my flying snake succesfully this way and she is an absolute mental piece.

A snake hook is good. I use one to lift the body so I can get my hand underneath. You could also wear a glove. This will give you more confidence to go straight in and pick the snake up, which is a lot less stressful to the snake too. Once out most snake will calm down so you only really need one glove.
I have been bit lots, but still flinch badly. As others have said its the shock of the strike rather than the pain...or the blood. ![]()
