you can always check how much you pay per kw, i moved home about 6 months ago, and since then i was paying nearly 3.5x the amount i used to pay, and no longer keep beardies, so i had a mate check the meter and i was paying 17.6pence per kw, it should be 7.2pence per kw!!!

I think you could probably negotiate a better deal, but depends on the area really. But yea, thermostats is the best way to save on electricity. Dimmers on the bulbs and mat stats on the heat mats. Probably cost a fair bit but then, as you know your cost per kw, you could calculate how many kw/day it needs to save to pay for itself in a year, and it probably will do that (don't know, never worked it out really). It'll certainly save loads in the summer and during the day I would imagine.
And a good stat should last 10+ years
