Default Grips

I have found with some narky snakes when in the viv and you cant get a snake pin in there I use/have used a set of litterpickers picker upy things (also sold in mobility shops for wheelchair users to reach things) to gently grip the snake behind the head allowing me to take a safe hold.

I have then used large plastic tubs with securing lids to put them in whilst cleaning the vivs etc, so I can repeat the process for putting back in the viv. I have found this invaluable when I am on my own, alowing me to quicker and in better control also not trying to untie a long snake from a bag that doesnt want to be in there, then not come out, also cant get bitten through the tub!

The grippy things are not small so I have only done this with larger critters (ie 8' pluss, even on a grumpy adult Berm). However some dont take kindly to this and coil the grips. The ones I have are rubber faced (some cheep ones are hard plastic) as to reduce the chance of injury, but still BE CAREFUL!!!

On the smaller snakes I just use snake hooks, some times 2 just to lift and manouver them.

I like life simple.............

As I get all my snake as rescues, as such dont know what they are like, in my bigger vivs I have small locking hatchs cut in to the side of the vivs which I feed through so I dont open the main viv door to do so, this also means they get used to being fed through the hatch not the main door, so as in "tap training" they get used to hatch = food, door = handeling. Pluss they cant get out so easely! The hatch is only 6" x 4" or so, so I can get a rat or rabbit and a set of long tongs through, saving on possible tags when feeding. Again I only do this with the larger critters (Narky Boas etc), as the lil laddies cant reach, or cause damage.

Default dumeril baby

i have a DBC baby i have to force feed but fortunatly enough its really quite easy to handle him when hes out of his tank. Can anyone give me advice, or PM me on how to get him out of his tank, because ive tried letting him come out on his own and he takes hours! and if i try and lift him up all he does is strike but hes never tagged me.. yet. He has struck at me 4 times whilst ive had him, and its upsetting me that im the reason he doesnt like being handled as i have to force feed. please help!!!

I have a coastal carpet python he never bit for 5 months, then one day i spooked him and he bit and i put him back now he bites often and it comes keen. the best thing to do is when your snake bites don't put it back show it that your not afraid and you the boss.

Default Feisty Snakes

I have had a few that have been rather snappy initially but have calmed down dramatically.

My Macklotts python always used to strike the glass and my face if the viv was open, she was a good shot even when I went in from the side. I just used to wear gloves and come in from behind her, once out of the viv there was no problem, eventually I took the gloves off and now she isn't bothered at all, my most placid!! I found if I hesitated it was almost as if she sensed the fear, so go in confidently. I think moving her viv to a lower level settled her too.

My boa maggie used to be named miss hissy fit, mouth wide and hissing, we used the hook on her to get her out, after a short while of handling she also is one of my most placid, if she doesn't want to be held though she will tell me.

Our BRB's are feisty when you try to stop them sauntering off, I have to put the hook flat on the head and pick them up, not a lot of pressure mind you as I wouldn't want to hurt them, just to keep them still and facing forwards. They don't strike in my hands just when I try to stop what they want to do.

Finally our False Water Cobra, the one we were most afraid of triggering, always wore gloves, went from behind and the hook if he wondered off. Ironically I never heard him hiss or saw him strike and we handled him cautiously but without gloves fine. (He is very quick compared to other snakes)

I have a year old Cali Kingsnake who is quite vicious. He'll strike at you the second you put your hand into his tank. He's also quite partial to hunting my fingers if I have them exposed, so I've ended up having to wear a pair of thin gloves to stop him biting me. It seems to do the trick.
