Default Mystery Brachy

I got this Brachy a year ago as a 1.5 inch cutie. He is now 4 inches and even more of a mystery than he was back when he was little.
Becky and I both think he could be a Brachy albopilosum/vagans hybrid so will live out his life here on the pet only shelf

My new B. klaasi moulted 2 days ago and is male. He is only 2+ inches and as cute as can be. I will be keeping my eyes open for a female for him.

I would agree that he looks like an Albopilosum/Vagans hybrid. It has characteristic elements of both, by the way it looks. I'm glad you are a sensible owner and put him on the pet only shelf. So many people ruin the bloodlines with creation of hybrids. I guess it is good in a way that most hybrids cannot breed due to being infertile.

Thanks Alex I wouldnt want to breed from him and add to the problem of hybrids. I think when they are crosses from the same Genus there is a chance of fertility kind of like crossing a dog with a wolf. Same Genus so the offspring are fertile. I would hate to find out though. I love my little guy so am kind of pleased he wont be going for breeding

I have a couple of unidentified Avics that are also on the pet only shelf

Oh thats a shame. Could of sent the skin to someone to see what the spermathecae were shaped like. Would of been interesting! Then again... I wonder if hybrids, being infertile and all... actually get spermathecae???

Can you direct me to a paper or something that gives info on the infertility in hybrids Becky? I'm really curious about it and if infertility happens in a hybridisation between two species of the same Genus. Thanks xx

Thats a good point. But then donkeys and horses are both Equus yet the offspring is always infertile (mules and hinny's) so i assume it is ?

I'm going to have to go off and ask some questions now that its got my interest

Its wierd how some species can hybridise and their offspring are fertile while others species that cross are infertile. More reading to do. Hmmmm.
