They can do well at room temperature if your room is warm and never allowed to get really cold. They do prefer heat mats though. They are pretty cheap so I don't see a reason not to have one. I found when I didn't have a heatmat all my spiders stayed on the side of the tank, but as soon as I got a heatmat they all went on the floor and have stayed there since.

Wouldn't go for a Chilean myself. Found them to be a bit sneaky. One minute you'll get them out for a quick play and the next thing you know, they're trying ot eat you. They can be handled but not for a decent length of time and you can't really enjoy it. Much more trustworthy are the Brachypelma albopilosa and Brachypelma vagans. Wont bite you and will play for as long as you want them to.

Nice tarantulas are no fun.

My chilie can be temperamental, but give it a prod with the tongs and you will find out what mood its in.

Meh, Chiles are crap. Probably quite a tasty snack though :P

B. albopilosa is probably my favourite to handle as the vagans generally doesn't keep still.

The spider to have for fun poking is the Orange Starburst Baboon. They're quite easy to deal with until you have to move them from tub to tub.
