I would recommend a Grammostola Rosea (Chile Rose) or a Euathlus Truculentus (Chilean Beautiful). The Chilean Beautiful is a little different to what most people would buy as a first spider, but they are generally like puppies compared to most tarantulas. I would recommend a Euathlus Truculentus over a Grammostola Rosea because out of all the ones I have owned I have never had one get defensive. You will meet so many spider keepers which say not to hold your spider, but if you are careful there is no harm in doing so. I hold mine on a daily basis and have never had a problem.

Hope this helps,
Alex

Most of the Brachypelma's and Grammostola's would suit for a beginner although each spider is individual. My G. rosea is complete nutter and yet some are as gentle as a puppy.

Not all will be able to be handled. Have a look around some websites and if you see one that takes your fancy ask here and there is bound to be someone with experience of that spider

Good luck with your search

It all depends on the species, size and where you get them from. I wouldn't get one from a pet shop as you will generally get ripped off. What sort are you after? I might have a few for sale.
