GBB may not be a good one to start off on, they are quite quick and flick hairs a lot.

Well, I don't plan on giving it much chance to run! But I do appreciate your experience and I am still looking at other species, especially the ones that everyone always recommends for starters. Although I'm not fully decided on species, I thought I'd ask about the viv because I was curious.

Red Knee it might be.

Red knee is an amazing first choice, however adults are quite pricey. TBH it doesn't matter what spider you choose, as long as your prepared for it. i.e. Baboons and cobolts aggressiveness and Pokeys moving faster than the eye can register.

Like a few of you I never intended getting a spider and have to get the hoover out to suck up house spiders lol but I also had a spare tank. The idea of getting one slowly grew and when I was offered an adult female Curly for free I said yes without much thought. When it arrived I was really nervous, nervous to the point of being a bit shaky and wondering what I'd gotten myself into. Seeing it on the side of the tank was pretty freaky for a few weeks and changing the water was with a lot of spillage! But time passes and I've become used to her and don't have second thoughts about how close she may be to my hand. As everyone told me at the time... you'll never stop at one, sure enough a few months later I added a gorgous Pink Toe to my collection and staying on the archnid theme have recently branched out into Scorpions. I used to hate scorpions more than spiders!

What I'm trying to say is that you will be scared and apprehensive and wonder what you'd done when you're sat there looking at your new spider but that will wear off over time and you'll soon be looking for where to squeeze more tanks in.

The same goes for your other halves, mine keeps asking me if she can now hold my Curly but I won't let her! A few months back and she wouldn't even look at it.

See the link in my sig for pics of my spiders and their tanks.

Well, as I said, unless the spider is willing to eat my girlfriend, I think it's more likely we'll be seeing a baby cham or something occupying the spare exo terra. But, I'm definitely considering and pushing for the idea.

I saw a goliath bird eater in a rep shop near me the other day. Any takers? I actually really want a GBB now after all that talk of how easy they are to look after.
