Default pink toe

I got my son a pink toe (Avicularia avicularia).from my local shop.
I think everything is ok but my other half would like to know what the spider is up to. It sits halfway up the glass and looks like its cleaning its feet. It grabs one foot at a time in its fangs and appears to be putting it in its mouth. Im not worried but would appreciate someone clarifying the spiders behaviour.

Thanks in advance
Darren

Its a Avicularia sp. Guyana, the cleaning of the feet is pretty normal, some of mine do it. Its probably because they have small hooks at the bottom of their feet and they sometimes get coated in so much dirt they need to clean them to climb surfaces.

I know one thing its hungry little bugger and its more than paid for itself. Since we got it her friends have stayed away from our house

Cheers again

Avicularia sp. Guyana is the true name for the Pink toe.

Avicularia Avicularia is a trade name.

Avicularia Avicularia is the scientific name (and so the most sepcific name for it)
Anything with a 'first' name and sp. 'something' after it has not been formally classified yet. When a name is repeated twice over (like with these guys) it means that it was the first of that family described officially. All others in the same family will be "Avicularia something-else"

Trade names tend to be the common names - ones I know for this species are "pink toe tree spider" "pink toe tarantula" "pink toe" etc...

I love to sit and watch my Avic's grooming. They are so cute when they do it.
The name Avicularia avicularia isnt really used now since no-one knows what the real one looks like. There have been so many Avics sold under than name but all different so they are now just Avicularia sp "guyana" until more work is done to sort out the genus.

There is an excellent article here The Tarantula Store -> The Genus Avicularia for anyone interested in Avics.

Yeah was gona say, there's no easy way to describe why its sp. "Guyana" now and not avicularia avicularia. 90% of pink toe's you will buy as Avic avic.
Sod it i'm gonna make a thread on it
