Default Millipede help

I've just checked on my african black trains and they are absolutley infested with mites. These are not the few large, mobile guys that are common on milli's and I've never had a problem with before. These are in their hundreds. Tiny and stationary, concentrated around the segment edges and particularly around the back end.

How do I get rid of them without hurting the pedes?

Cheers

Andy

low humidity, raised temps..thats the best
you can actuall scrape them off with your fingernail, theyr not that fixed.
its somethign that might take a while to resolve, but you should be able to help somewhat.
Try scraping butdont be rough incase you damage the mili

A few suggestions I've found whilst researching are

1) Q-tip (does that mean cotton bud in US speak?) either wet or covered in vasaline and lots of patience

2) washing in warm water (limited success stories)

3) in a bag of flour / corn-starch (assuming that is corn flour over here (?)) then throwing mite infested flour away. (Lots of concern over blocked spiricales on that one

4) Hypoaspis mites. Any one know any UK supplier links (I've tried googling but the company filter keeps hindering me (how the hell 'hypoaspis mites' trigger the porn filter, I'll never know!)

5) paper towels and warmth

I keep mine currently in a 12L RUB with three to four inches of a mix of forest bed and 'bug bed' (it's the bug bed I'm blaming for harbouring the mites - it often has woodlice and tiny centipedes in so i'm assuming it has hundreds of other critters (guess who's microdinking his bug bed from now on!)

First thing I'll do when I get home then is empty the RUB, and throughly clean it then put kitchen towel and a water bowl in. I'll also add a hide and keep them a bit warmer. I'll also manually remove as many as I can with a cotton bud.

I'll keep you posted on my progress, thanks for the help guys

Cheers

Andy

Here's the good guys

These are the 'new' guys

in fact in tis one you can make out both

Now on kitchen towel and slightly warmer with a water bowl. Vaseline covered cotton buds did nothing, scraping removed a few and washing gently in warm water removed a few more, but there are still loads on it

Hopefully the drying out thing will work.

Cheers for the help so far guys

Andy

yep, theyr concerning mites, defiely need sorting otherwise itl kill your millis.
Theses are the sort i would usually try to scrape off.. then corn flour makes sense but id be cautious of it and their spiracles.. the spiracles, as with centipedes are direct holes for air to penetrate every part of the millis body, if they are blocked your essentially asphixiating that region of the body. id be very cautious of it, though in theory sounds good
