I get where your coming from Vicky. I don't hold mine although I'd like to, I'm just too scared!!
My chile is very docile. I have my hand in changing water etc and she doesnt move but still never plucked up courage to pick her up. Never handled my sling as it's a fast little bugger. Wouldn't dream of handling my salmon pink. I only have to move tank and she starts flicking - she's pure evil!!! |

Handling spiders is always a controversial subject. Some do, some dont. My opinion is that the spider doesn't ever really get used to being handled, its just some tolerate it more then others.
Some would say there is no benefit to the spider if you do, so why bother? But, they are fascinating creatures and we want to interact with our little critters! So I dont think its such a bad thing, there may be no benefit to the spider, but if done properly, there is no harm either. I like to handle mine every now and then. Confidence is the main thing here. Just place your hand flat on the substrate and gently coax the spider on. If you handle them, make sure you are close to the floor or on the bed or something (just incase!!) |

I've held the more docile ones, like Smithi, Vagans, Albipolosum and most slings when they run up my arm etc. Wouldn't touch my baboons or pokie's tho. Never been bitten in 3 years so don't know how it feels, some peeps say its like a bee sting in wich case I'd be ok as I've been stung by bee's and swaps and never reacted to the venom.
Been bitten by the hamster, bloody hurts that does lol.

well, you gotta be pretty silly to let it on your face....(iZAN
, well face is more silly than your skull, it would only scrape your skull, lol)Its a risk you take, though i spose she wasnt expecting it..im sure she would have flinched or something to induce a bite, they dont bit efor no reason. poor woman! Having a spider on your eye is about as tempting as putting one in your pants!, soft squidgy skin, with soft squidgy ball behind, lol Iv yet to be bitten and iv held mostly all my tarantuals on different occasions, including 18cm L violicepes, 20+ T blondi, 10cm P fasciata, 6cm Macrothele sp. 5cm OBT, 12cm S calceata plus loads more NB - Macrothele sp. is a Trapdoor spider... theyr bloody mean buggers but predictalbe somewhat, just like most Ornithoctoniinae
