Default Dumb Sizing Question,,,?

What reference points do the "L4/5" etc use to size the spiders? Its all over you tube but I havent seen it mentioned elsewhere.
Is this an accepted sizing scale, if so where is the key?
And why "L" ?
I'm puzzled, but then again I usually am

American's and other countries tend to use it but we don't really use it over here. We have spiderling, juvenile, sub adult and adult. Much easier
