also some are more likely to eat the male prematurely than others (B. vagans especially)
if the male startles the female then he is almost certainly going to be dinner, sometimes there is no real reason other than 'because she can' I have seen well fed recently moulted females chase the males to eat them, but at the same time seen hungry females show no aggression at all.

if a female mantid is fed enough she wont eat the male..im gueesing its the same for spiders.
