this is hard to explain without being too knowledgeable about different languages.
The goliath has two scientific names Theraphosa (genus) and blondi (species) Therapohs-a (a= feminine) apophysis (synonymised from Pseudotheraphosa, i assume it has something to do with Theraphosa being revised from the unused (as far as i know) genus Mygale) Avicularia - feminine Cyclostern-um (neutral) fasciatum Cyriopagop-us (masculine) If a genus name is male or female then the following species name should be the same. Its a bit more complicated when you take into account revisions, i think revisions techincally are supposed to be changed slightly but most dont seem to for a while (lyrognathus robusta/ lyrognathus robustus). then there is -i (Theraphosa blond-i) the I signifiies that its named after a person. Selenocosmia javanen-sis (-sis syas that the species named after a locale. Im probably wrong but this is my understanding Its probably just a thread of jargon, but it might help IF its right so if entrepid taxonomists around please let me know, ta
