I'm looking to buy a female Chile Rose. I have her home ready, however the pet/reptile shops that I've visited have ranged from rubbish to absolutely terrible, having been greeted by anything from unlocked vivariums and terrariums to an abnoxious little man telling me that I shouldn't waste my time reading up on looking after tarantulas... they don't need heat mats... need I say more!?
Does anyone know of any breeders or reputable shops in the Staffordshire/Cheshire area who may be able to help? Thanku |

Hi,
My job takes me all over the UK and time providing, I check out Reptile / Invert shops whenever i can. Unfortunately I find more outlets are shoddy and clueless than respectable and informative. More often than not, tarantulas and scorpions are left poorly maintained like some kind of afterthought in the corner. There is a particular shop in Staffordshire, where by coincidence, they have Chile Roses left in truly awful conditions. The poor things are stuffed in containers just larger than their legspan and the dead ones remain on display ! I contacted the local authorities, Pet Shop inspectors who have done nothing despite my persistence. I also called the RSPCA, who dont cover inverts, which is a joke but lets not go there. Therefore, if you would like to SAVE and RESCUE a Chile from neglect, i will tell you where they are if you PM me. They are/were £19.99 should they still be alive. Sorry for the 'Doom and Gloom' but its truly sad. On a more positive note, there is a very good T seller in Staffs. Not a huge collection but they would certainly have Chile's and very well looked after ones indeed. Its called Hollybush Garden Centre in Cheslyn Hay J11 M6. If you go, ask for Mike Conabeer. He is on the BTS commitee and a truly decent guy. Apparently, there is also another reportedly good trader around Cheshire. I havent been myself and so cant vouch but its called The Jungle ? Or something like that. Its in Buxton. (Try Googling it.) If you want to venture further South, theres Birmingham Reptiles and Pets. This shop is 'spotless' and the young guy called Chris is a big Spider conservation fan. (They have a website.) In abscense of the above there is always the 'Mail Order' option. I dont tend to buy this way myself, purely because I like to see the Spider im purchasing. However many people use this method and Lee at Thespidershop is highly rated. With many comments on good quality specimens and more importantly............ responsible packaging. Either way, heres wishing you luck on finding and keeping a great Spider and if you want any more info, feel free. IZAN Last edited by izan; 19-09-2007 at 07:56 PM. |
