Question Spider Questions...

Hi everyone i haven't got a tarantula but was thinking of getting one in the future to try and curb my small phobea of house spiders! plus they don't take up much room and look cool. I know nothing on spiders yet tho and was looking for some questions answered...

- Do any of them bite? if so is it venemous or particularly soar?
- Can they hurt you in other ways?
- What are the best coulourful spiders out there? i've seen red knees and blue ones?
- What do they eat?
- Are they ok to handle? How often do you clean there enclosure?
- Can they be housed together?
- Any spiders to avoid outright?
- Any spiders that are perfect pets?

Thanks for the replies in advance!!! Anything else you fancy adding in be my guest!

Do any of them bite? if so is it venomous or particularly soar?
yes they do bite, yes they are venomous a bite is like a bee/wasp sting depending which spider bites you,it can cause severe allergic reactions in some cases
- Can they hurt you in other ways?
they can flick hairs which can cause allergic reactions so you would`nt want them in your eyes
- What are the best coulourful spiders out there? i've seen red knees and blue ones?
there are a lot,i particularly like the Psalmopoeus irminia beautiful colours
- What do they eat?
crickets,locusts,mealworms,roaches,mice
- Are they ok to handle? How often do you clean there enclosure?
i never handle my T`s apart from re housing but even then it`s very minimal, i spot clean every week and a full clean every couple of months
- Can they be housed together?
no,i would`nt advise it
- Any spiders to avoid outright?
Baboons,pokies,cobalt blue
- Any spiders that are perfect pets?
Chile rose,curly hair

hope this helps other members will have loads more info for you

All of them can bite and all are venomous, some more so than others, the reaction largely depends on the person, some are more ready to bite than others
- Can they hurt you in other ways?
New world T's flick urticating hairs from their abdomons which itch like hell
- What are the best coulourful spiders out there? i've seen red knees and blue ones?
Red Knees (Brachypelma smithi) are good beginner T's, the blue one is probably Haplopelma lividum, not for beginners
- What do they eat?
Crix/Locusts/Meal worms/roaches, anything smaller than themselves really
- Are they ok to handle? How often do you clean there enclosure?
some can be handled, others cant, some that have reputations for being handleable can still be grumpy and vice-versa
- Can they be housed together?
Some can given enough space, most will eat each other
- Any spiders to avoid outright?
OBT,Orange babbon T or orange bitey thing.lol
- Any spiders that are perfect pets?
Spiders aren't really "pets" they tolerate handling rather than liking it and prefer to be left alone

Thanks for the replies in advance!!! Anything else you fancy adding in be my guest!
As a beginner I'd go for a Chile rose (Grammostola rosea) or Red Knee(Brachypelma smithi) they allow for mistakes better than others.
Get a juvinile rather than a sling as sling take a bit more looking after.
Good luck

spiderling (baby)

Chile rose can but will rarely bite, i'm told it would be like a bee sting which if you are allergic to bee's could be a problem, and they can flick hairs (more likely than a bite) which will itch they area the kairs land on.

They are called "pet rocks"in my house because mine will sit in one place for days on end without moving.lol

- Do any of them bite? if so is it venemous or particularly soar? All are able to bite, but some are more willing to do so. Most are like a bee or wasp sting, but some can be like a hornet sting. And some can even cause paralasis (sp)
- Can they hurt you in other ways? New world T's can flick urticating hairs, which can be very itchy
- What are the best coulourful spiders out there? i've seen red knees and blue ones? They are many colourful ones about, but the best colourful one for a beginer is the B. smithi (red knee)
- What do they eat? Anything smaller then themselves, but mainly crix or locusts
- Are they ok to handle? How often do you clean there enclosure? I don't handle any of my T's, but some will tollerate it, mainly the beginer T's like the G. rosea (chilean rose).
- Can they be housed together? No, they will eat eachoth. Only the odd Aviculara or Poecilotheria species will be ok to house together, but it's not advised to do so if you are a novice.
- Any spiders to avoid outright? Avoid ALL old world T's and asian T's. So no baboons, Pokies (Poecilotheria species), cobalts. And stay away from the really large ones like the T. blondi (goliath bird eater)
- Any spiders that are perfect pets? Nope, spiders are display animals, most of them hide quite a lot.

There is a sticky thread at the top of the invert section I wrote that you may want to check out.

Thing with Chile rose, dont let your dog near em, the hairs are incredibly effective toa dogs respiritory system and can even kill your dog with only a flick or two of inhaled hair.
Bare in mind that Venom is host specific, and affects different animal anatomies differently.
Atrax robustus (sydney funnel web) will kil a human, but have nothing more than mechanical injuries to a mouse.

Thanks for the info! Not really my cup of tea i don't think although the idea of having one is nice but if i couldn't get it out much i wouldn't enjoy it so much. If it stays curled up all day whats there to look at? for display purposes i mean...
