Im new to keeping T's as i only got my first one (Mexican Red Rump) 3 days ago. Hes only small at the moment, probably an inch or so big.
Anyway, hes been in his new tank since Saturday and when we put him in there he didnt move in the slightest all day. When we woke up Sunday morning he had gone under one of his plant pots and barricaded himself in using the soil and some web. Woke up again today and he'd been at it again...now the entrance to the pot is pretty much completely covered with no way in or out. I appreciate hes only small, in a new enclosure and probably scared but is this barricading normal behaviour? I dont plan on feeding him for another day or 2 to let him settle in a bit first but as the entrance to his hide is completely covered i cant see how the cricket will get in or he will get out!! Will he just bash down this soil/web wall when hes ready to come out?? Sorry if this is a dumb question but as said, this is all new to me.

Ok thanks for that.
So should i try feeding in the next day or 2 then or should i leave it another week? Also, should i lift the pot at all to check on it or shall i just leave it be?? I dont want to stress it out too much!!

if your spider is barrraced in there now just leave it be because it will either have done it because it is stressed or moulting.dont try feeding if it is not out in the open and dont put no crickets in because if the t is moulting the cricket could get in there and kill your t. and dont move the pot as this will really stress the t if it iss moulting

Right i had a closer look at the little one this morning through a gap left in its 'road block'.
It was laying in an unusual position, legs at weird angles and looked rather dark...im hoping this is what they look whilst moulting and this is nothing more sinister! Assuming it was moulting how long should this take roughly to complete? Next, i read in another post to leave 5ish days after a moult before feeding. This would take the hunger strike up to 2 weeks!! How long can juvi's go without food??

I usually leave my juvis and adults two weeks after molting just to make sure theyre ok and active enough, but slings can be left a week.
What kind of position is it lying in? If its very dark, and especially if it has a dark abdomen, then its most likely going to molt very soon, although I waited months for mine. When its ready to molt, it will lay down a curvy shaped web (although some go all out and make loads of other web too and Ive heard of some not even making web at all), and when its ready itll flip over onto it on its back, stay still for a while and then begin to molt. The process could take anything from 1 hour to 8 or so, depending on the size of your spider. It will lay still for a while after molting on its back to rest before flipping over and for the next few days it will be sluggish, sleeping alot, and maybe even wobbly. The only thing you can do now is make sure its got enough humidity, dont feed it, and wait. If youre lucky enough to catch it happening you'll be very lucky but dont disturb it in any way. I saw mine molt the whole way through and just caught my second one kicking the skin off with the last push, and the third one I missed. Theres nothing like it. Keep us updated, and any pics would be good. When my red rump was molting it was the first time for me and I was so excited and scared...I posted on here about a dozen times, even though I knew already the procedure and I couldnt intervene, and everyone was great so im sure everyone will be happy to help in any way possible. Good luck.
