Default Want a spider...

I really want a T, but I'm arachnaphobic

If I do get one it'd take a while to convince the parents but reckon they'd be cool with it as long as I research & know what I'm doing.

So, basicallyyyy..Could you give me some suggestions to research please?

It has to be..slow, not jumpy, not skittish, easy to keep, not generally known to be aggressive..erm..think that's more or less it.

But I'm really really scared of any type of spider but I'm *considering* getting one, don't want an animal that I can't look after properly due to my phobia.

Also any general advice which I won't find in care sheets.

Thanks, & be gentle spidery people

Matt.

I strongly sugges the following:

The chilean rose
The mexican red knee
The red leg
The flame knee

I would suggest pink toe, as they have the same temprament, but they can jump, and Id suggest a mexican red rump but they can be very skittish. Both are good once you gain confidence with one of those in the list though.
Bare in mind all spiders can be skittish, agressive if they want to be. The ones above are generally considered docile enough to be handled and they wont jump out at you like baboon spiders will.
I wouldnt recommend holding any spider though, especially while you are still nervous.
I wouldnt worry too much about your fear. I wouldnt go near a T or any spider before, and was abit nervous about my first but after the first night I was ready for more. Best not prepare your rents for one of the above...try all of the above! cos thats what itll end up like. You dont stop at one. Or I dont anyway...
As for care, google some care sheets, and Ill browse for some for you, but as long as you know how much humidity (how damp it has to be and how often to spray it etc) then youre more or less set.
They are very easy to keep, and what little things you do need to take note off will come naturally after reading some and getting your first.
The above T's are also very good beginner spids, as they are easy to care for and like it relativley dry.
Good luck and let us know what you get

Thanks for your reply

I was considering the mexican red rump as missmoose said her juvi off athravan was REALLY docile & a lot of people seem to say the same. I need something that I literally need to force to move lol.

I shall research all of the above thanks

I had/have the same phobia but hubby puts up with my amphibs so it seemed mean not to let him keep spiders.

I have found that I don't consider Ts to be spiders, I don't know whether its because they are bigger and kinda furry but we have a Chilean Rose whose viv is on the bedside table and I adore watching her though I am very nervous still of his Cobalt blue cos of the rep they have.

I would recommend starting with one of the ones suggested by BlackRose but don't expect it to conquer your fear totally....house spiders still freak me out

get something from a sling or small juvie so you can get used to it as it grows up, and maybe let someone else (experienced) handle it before you do so you can see that its okay and then they can nudge it onto your hand in your own time and take it off you if you freak out.

People say a chile rose is for beginners, but mines fast and extremely nervous, and ive heard horror stories about other peoples Chile Rose's being nutters.

so i'd go with
Mexican Red Knee (Brachypelma Smithi)
Mexican Red rump (Brachypelma Vagans)
or possibly a Curly Hair (Brachypelma albopilosum)

Lol ok.

Yeh I know someone off here whos got a MENTAL chile, bites & everything apparently, just randomly bites him.

I'm going to have a look into the species said, but also going to have a nosey on youtube so I can get an idea of how quick they are etc, sounds proper daft but it'll help me lol

I had a red knee run up my arm & down my back when I was about 5, the man just stood there laughing while I was in tears..That may have something to do with my fear lol.
