She's there just below the surface, you can just make out a dark oval shape with an orange stripe, much easier to see her in the later pic though!

A couple of new pics from yesterday. They're getting used to being back out in the pond now and being a bit braver, I can get a lot closer without them all diving in the water!

Wow Graham, thats brilliant!! At what age/size can you start to put them outside? and what do you put them in when they come indoors?

Well in theory you could put them outdoors from any age, bearing in mind that the smaller they are the warmer it needs to be for them, so little ones would have to go out later in the year and come in earlier than adults.
But most people wait at least 2 or 3 years before putting them out, predation of tiny turts is a worry and the pond would have to be very securely netted, it's not really a problem for adults though, at least not around here.
This winter mine were in a large temporary indoor pond, it's been dismantled now and I'm planning to build a bigger more permanent one in GRP and acrylic for next winter, in the region of 750 litres.

Yes they all get along fine, at least now that I have more females than males. I got a male and a female earlier this year that came together and he wouldn't leave her alone, she got a nasty bite on her neck and I had to separate them, but now they're back together with all the rest and they're OK, the males need more females to keep them distracted!

I'm trying to breed the Southern Painteds as they've been unavailable in the UK for many years, no luck so far but this is the first year I've had this big group together.

They'd probably be fine, but when introducing any new turts you need to be prepared in case they don't get along. It's also a good idea to feed the adults and hatchlings separately until the little ones get bigger, in a feeding frenzy tiny heads and tails can easily be mistaken for food pellets!
