So I need to take the gravel out and get rid of the lid?
What do I use in place of the gravel? They like to climb up it then go onto the dock

Instead of gravel you can use a single layer of smooth pebbles or large slate chips, they're too big for them to ingest and the gaps in between are big enough that it doesn't trap too much debris. The other problem with gravel of course is that it quickly gets filthy and provides a perfect breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

From the point of view of cleanliness though there's nothing quite like no substrate at all!
