Put your probe on the hot end, never on the cold end really as then your hot end would most likely end up getting far too hot.

What size viv are you using? The wattage of your bulb depends on your viv size for it to regulate the cool end properly by itself basically. (I use 150w for my 6x2x2, 75w for my 4x2x2 and 50w on my 3x2x2 - this also depends on the reptile though as for beardies when I kept them I always used 60w normal light bulbs in 4x2x2's but my snakes have red bulbs which come in 50w/75w/100w/150w)
