Default Axolotl Quextion

Hey i've had my first axolotl for four months now. Her name is Tristen. she's lives in a tank on her own at the moment, but i was hoping to get her a friend. i would like to get another axolotl and a plecko. her tank is 18 degrees c. i was wondering if another axolotl and a plecko would be the best choise. can anyone help advice me on the situation?

What size is your tank?
I would not recommend keeping a pleco with your axolotl, i have heard stories of axies getting seriously injured from pleco.
Another axolotl would be fine as long as your tank is big enough.

I think you could add another axolotl without any problems but I wouldn't add any plecos because they grow quite big and generally prefer warmer water (24-26*c I think) and axolotls don't like it to be much over 20*c. If you do get another axolotl watch out for any nipping because this could stress them.
Hope I was of some help,
Stuart

Go for it they're great when you have little groups, just provide plenty of hides and plants and try to get another one of roughly the same size, you will get the odd nipped toe or leg or gill but they are quite tough and can regenerate limbs so if the worst happens it's not the end of the world, keep them well fed to eliminate any accidents, they prefer it on the cool side in my experience and wouldn't push the water temp above 18degrees!
Good luck!

Hi Pippa,

I asked this question on Pets SE (an expert Q&A site) for you. You can read the answers and advice here: amphibians - Are axolotls and plecos compatible? - Pets Stack Exchange

Hope they help

As everyone on here has said, don't put a pleco in with an axolotl. You can keep axolotls together, though, as they're not really territorial (even amongst males). For your size tank I would say you could house one more axolotl in it if you wanted to.

Pretty sure that everyone agreed that axolotls and a pleco shouldn't be kept together

"I found this question on an amphibians forum. The answers provided on there were contradictory and I was hoping we could do better here on Pets.SE."

or am i missing something?
