Default Red Bellied Newt Habitat

Hi, kept reptiles for years but just rescued a fire bellied newt from a bad situation. I have a ten gallon aquarium I'm going to set him up in, but I need a little advice. I see guides saying you can keep them in fully aquatic setups with just a platform out of the water and other guides say to keep it with shallow water and more land. Any experience with this? I was planning on setting up a themed tank but need to know water level. Also, most guides recommend a lot of plants, but are fake plants alright? I never had much luck with real plants back when I kept fish.

Which species? Japanese (Cynops spp) or American (Notopthalmus spp)
have one, Cynops, that was a wc adult when I bought it over 30 years ago.
Kept at room temperature in pond water with a handful of weed, gravel on the bottom of the tank and a piece of floating bark. Fed on earthworms and brumated through the winter.

In which case, as above. Mine is in an unheated tank, with around 6 inches of pond water, handful of weed, and fed every few days on worms.
