I think male snakes in general are poor breeders when they are carrying a lot of weight, often when they are bigger they will not even attempt to breed with all the right conditions and seriously big males will have lower fertilities. I keep males of any species slim if I am intending to breed them.

They do better kept lean, on average i like to keep my boys around 1-1.2kg and solid, some are just naturally squishy but the leaner the better.

Don't however confused lean with underweight.

nope, all my big males have been 'at it' non stop...

current weights...

05 pied 1600gr 15 locks
05 pied 1200gr 16 locks
06 pied 1400gr 19 locks
07 spider 1400gr 13 locks
06 spider het 1600gr 12 locks

all decent locks
most were 2-300gr heavier before the breeding season

have found that minimum weight 'seems' to be 6-700gr before the smaller ones really get going properly
