Post breeding Fire Bellied newts-HELP

I am trying to breed my Fire Belly newts,i've heard that putting them through hibernation not only encourages them to breed but if they dont go through hibernation their lifespan will be shortened,is this true?If so,how long will they need to hibernate for?How do they breathe when they are hibernating underwater(do they come up and take in oxygen like they usually do while non-hibernating?)and also, they probably needn't be fed during hibernation, right?

p.s. - some questions have already been answered, but im just making sure. Please help me,new to breeding newts.
