Default I dont understand Halogeb basking spot lamp

So i have it on a dimming thermostat, had the probe around 8 inches away pinned to back wall. set it to 26C so why when i take surface temp readings under the bulb is it 40C?!

Am i supposed to have the probe directly under the bulb? the snakes just gonna move it.

its a 3ftx 15inchx 15 inch viv.

clearly something im not understanding here. help!

Where you place the probe is where the temperature that you set as the hot spot will be. So if the probe is some distance away then the heat directly under the bulb will clearly be higher.

the above is correct. It is important that we measure actual energy at basking and not just heated air. I place mine about 2" outside of the beam radius of the lamp. Then measure with your non-contact and you will soon see an accurate picture of the energy that you are providing.

The only time I move the probe away is, when i need a temp higher than the stat allows for. I then have to trick the stat so that it is measuring a lower temp so that the basking area is hotter. Then its check, check and check again until I am sure that I am providing what I wanted to
