Default do you really need a bottom layer

do you really need a drainage layer
if so why I can not see any benefit of having one

No you don't.

Then again it depends on the set up, substrate and what's being kept in the viv

it will be a fully planted viv with dart frogs in
so will be misting about three times a day

Then yes, a drainage layer would be advantageous
