Default Western Banded Gecko Substrate

i am looking at getting western banded geckos (2-3) in either a 30x30x30 or a 45x45x30 exo terra and have been doing lots of research but cannot decide what substrate to use, a healthy wbg is just fine on sand but i kind of want to make it bioactive but i am not sure whether this is even possible on sand. not sure whether earthmix arid would do the trick

I think (not certain, mind), that their requirements are similar to those of leos, with possibly different (hotter?) temp requirements.

Looking at what i can find for them, sand is not a good substrate choice. Theres quite a few posts about them having a delicate or fragile digestive system, sand would likely be too much.
Im finding references to arizona as natural habit... so hard dense earth, dusty in part, rocky, lots of small stones, cactus type plants and arid environment and the animal needing multiple hides and hiding spaces with several of them kept like humid hides.

So along similar lines to what Wilkins has said.

I may use some excavator sand just to make a structure for the terrarium then cover it in earthmix arid and make it bioactive.
