Default Custom hide creation...

Hi, so I got my first reptile not long ago, a leopard gecko which I named Smaug after the dragon from the Hobbit which is my favourite book.
Would have been more appropriate had I gotten a bearded dragon but still.

Anyway, if anyone has read the book or perhaps even seen the first film, you'll know that Smaug lives within the Lonely Mountain, and I was thinking about giving my leo's enclosure a bit of a theme, so I thought about making a custom hide.

So my question is, have any of you ever made custom hides or anything similar, and what kind of materials would be:

A) Easy to obtain
B) Easy to mould
C) Safe to use in his enclosure
D) Okay to paint

Thanks in advance

I have replied to your PM but just a few things to add. You should be able to get polystyrene/kingspan/celotex free, there's always offcuts going somewhere, just ask around. It's extremely simple to carve and mould. You can use a Dremel, bread knife, sand paper or simply your hands. Grouting will give it a rock effect and make it hard, also makes it easy to drybrush. If you're sealing at the end then it doesn't matter which paint you use otherwise I'd stick to acrylic paints.

You should take a look in the habitat section, lots of custom build things..

There are a few threads asking what's safe to use and step by step guides on building different things. Like this http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forum...late-rete.html

I contemplated the idea of trying to make a sci-fi themed enclosure for my crestie Dr Horrible but in the end I think a live plant set up is better.

Would love to see how your builds gets on so keep us updated when you start making work. Most people tend to use polystyrene to carve custom hides.

Sounds good.

Actual live plants in the enclosure or artificial plants?

Most people opt to have live plants with some type of bioactive soil. Which is just to say the soil has springtails, woodlice and sometimes worms to help with the clean up.
