Hypermelanistic Californian kings (2010)
A friend and I decided to put our Californian kings together and two of these popped out along with normal looking banded and striped forms. We have no idea where this apparently heterozygous trait originates from. They look uncannily like the Baja king (Lampropeltis getula natida) and some wild populations of hypermelanistic Californian kings, namely those collectively referred to as "black belly aberrations" from California’s San Joaquin Valley. Interestingly this region boarders Baja, so I wonder if some genetic flow may have seeped over. Either way, the hypermelanistic Californian king snakes we have produced are not necessarily related to the population mentioned above or indeed Baja kings. According to US breeders hypermelanistic lines are common in captive breedings. I personally haven't seen or heard of any here in the UK but I am not by any means suggesting this is a first for the UK. If you have any information that may interest me please don't hesitate to PM me.
