if you get 2 then ideally youll want 2 females. you cant tell their sex until they are about 18 months old though. you cant keep 2 unknowns together really until they are sexually mature. il be splitting my 3 up very shortly.

youre better to get 1 for now and then add another when its older.

have a look at Care of The Chinese Water Dragon lizard (enclosure, diet, health, illness, temp, heat, humidity, cage, vivarium, terrarium) for heating and lighting info. its easier than me typing out the same stuff.

as for what CWD's are like, they are awesome. they require quite a bit of space and are fairly expensive to get setup initially (budget for around £300-400 on equipment), they also eat a lot of food and that adds up, i spend about £40/week on 3 young juveniles, but im breeding my own food so in a few months i should have self sustaining colonies.

if you give them the space though (4x2x5 minimum really, w x d x h) in a suitably furnished viv with the right conditions, plenty of water to swim in, branches to climb, etc then they are awesome. they run and jump around all day. they are sort of handleable as babies, theyre so fast that they can be up your arm and gone halfway across the room before you can even react. but theyve got really good personalities.

i buy all my stuff online. there are no proper reptile shops in Basingstoke. youve got DH Water Gardens on the A33 at Sherfield that sell a few reptiles and a few bits of equipment. their prices are variable, some stuff is really cheap some stuff is really expensive.

for food there is a pet shop in the town centre, just inside the festival place doors where the Halifax bank is outside. also there is a pet shop in Chineham next to the scrapyard.

the closest proper reptile shops are Grange Reptiles near Southampton and South Coast Exotics near Portsmouth which are both excellent. if you want livestock, go to one of these 2!! then theres Portons Pet and Aquatics towards Salisbury which is ok
