    Its interesting that Box turtles can do it too. I read an article about it in New Scientist last year, which said it was unique to painteds but its not always the most reliable source!

    Hi mate, Picta are not the only species, as box turtles also have a capability. This capability lies mostly with neonates and serves those that overwinter in the nest after hatching. I understand thay have mechanism the prevents damaging ice crystals forming.

    Thanks for your note, I get pissed off with gratuitous postings that dont bring anything positive to the table. Sometimes I come over a tad hard then regret it, but sometimes it needs doing.
