Im no expert on Lizards but a mat will not be enough, your going to be looking at a lamp as well as a heat mat.

Some one else on here will come along to help soon!

never use heatmats with bearded dragons, they can't sense heat from underneath, they need heat from above.
it would sit on a heatmat until it burnt itself.

you need a bright white basking bulb connected to a dimming thermostat.

Default Night

I know I need a basking light for the day but if i do not use a heat mat how do I maintain the night time temp when the basking light is off, just as if the sun as set and night is in.

if your house stays above 18ºc at night you don't need heat, if it gets cold a ceramic should do the job.

Heat mats can be positioned on the floor, side or even the ceiling of a vivarium. As beardies sense heat from above I would go for the ceiling or side option. But as already said if the ambient room temperature is high enough then you won't need any additional heat at night.

A mat on the ceiling wouldn't really do that much as most of the heat would just rise upwards. If you're worried about the cold UK winternights get a day/night stat for the heat lamp, these work on timers and reduce the temp of the bulb during the night to a desired value.

Use a red bulb as reps can not see this spectrum of light and thus does not affect their night habits. Remember at night in the desert it can get very cool so i use no night heating.
