Question Big enough?

Hi,

I am hoping to turn our old fishtank into a a home for a slider type turtle, (or something of similar size) It's a fluval Duo 800, 40(L)x15(D)x18(H) inches which I worked out to be roughly 180 litres (conversions are not my strong point!!) I am only looking to keep the one turtle, and I am wanting to keep the hood on it for now. (I have 3 cats!)
It has twin lighting and I was thinking of getting the ReptiGlo tube lighting 2.0 & 5.0, but am not sure that it will be strong enough UVB output, so am also looking at 8.0 or 10.0. (I also don't wish to cook the little guy!) I am wanting to stay with the tube style lighting to start with so I can keep the hood on the tank.

So my questions are 1) Is the tank size ok for 1 turtle? 2) Which lighting is the best for my needs?

I just want to be sure about these because I want to get everything set up before I invest in a turtle, and I want to make sure it's right.

Your tank would be OK for a starter, but you'll need a bigger one in about 18 months time at most, and you will have to take the hood off as it needs to be completely open topped for maximum ventilation.

If the cats are a problem then you'll need to make a wire mesh lid instead.

You need an 8-10% UVB and a compact is better than a tube, you'll also need a spotlamp for heat, or use a MVB which provides heat and UVB in a single lamp.

Have you read a caresheet on Sliders The Terrapin Tank - www.TerrapinTank.co.uk -?
