Most obvious suggestion for a first snake is a corn snake. Cheap to buy, dont get massive, very friendly and never seem to go off food no matter what happens. Have a look in the care sheet section for some more details on exact requirements and google a few pics to see if you like the look of them.

In my opinion, the best snake for you is either a Corn snake or a Ball Python. Most people would have a corn snake to start off with but a Ball Python is always a good choice

I had my baby hoggie out tonight and she didnt hiss so I have her a gentle prod and she got hissy, shes funny.
I like the black and white banded cali kings, think I might go for one of those next, I didnt really consider them before just thought they were a bit common and boring but after seeing one in the flesh and handling I think theyre really attractive. theres lots of other colour forms that occur in the wild as well as the weird albinos and morphs they breed but I dont like them as much. Think they start around £40 so pretty cheap too.

If you can keep a corn successfully then you have a lot of options, for example:
milksnake
kingsnake
royal
boa (dwarf variety)
kenyan sand boa

Depends what takes your fancy
