Question Tortoise advice

Hi. I'm new to the site so please be gentle. I have had a Herman tortoise for about a year. He will now be around 2 years old. He generally seems happy and eats well. However sometimes he spends long periods of time in one corner appearing to be trying to climb out of his tortoise table. Has anyone got any ideas why. I have a 1.2m long table with heat mat and lamp plus a UV strip light. It is all laid out as seems to be suggested in all the books i've read. He has shelter to hide under.

Tortoises and heat mats do no mix, at all. I would advise you remove this a.s.a.p. Tortoises need to be able to 'see' their heat, so unlike most other reptiles, leaving mats underneath them can be dangerous.

It is possible it is trying to escape this excess heat, so I would remove and see what happens. Can I ask what your highest/lowest temps are? Do you have an outside enclosure for your tortoise?

You should come over to the shelled section, we are nice (mostly )
