Default Bulbguards for beardies, needed or not?

Hi, I have used a bulbguard with my baby beardie since I got him a couple of months ago. I bought it not knowing whether i needed it or not but to be on the safe side i did anyway.

I have taken it off just to change the bulb, should I put it back on? I'm a bit worried he might get caught in it if he tries to get locusts that climb up the side on the viv, on the other hand I don't want him to burn himself.

I'd say not.

From everything i have read it's best not to use them for reps with claws as thier claws can get stuck in the guard. They are best used for snakes.

Beardies sense heat best from above so i doubt they'd burn them selves on a red hot light bulb.

I don't use one and probably never will.

I don't use them and generally I advise people to avoid them. A beardie shouldn't be able to reach the bulb, and shouldn't be able to jump up and touch it either. That means it can't burn itself. Even if it could jump high enough, it could only bounce off the bulb, which isn't enough to cause a burn.

If you have a guard, it gives the beardie something to hold onto, so he can get a lot closer to the bulb where it's potentially too hot. Some of the metal guards can get hot enough to burn as well if the beardie chose to hang onto the guard.

Good point.. I'd just bought a guard for my basking bulb as well... Never considered the potential probs of having one...
