A leopard gecko would love it in there providing the substrate was changed and offered some more hides How much experience with reptiles does he have? Perhaps a small species of skink?
A bit of advice for your friend though, those dial thermometers are absolute pants, he should think about investing in a digital one

Is there anything in particular that takes his fancy?
Because filling a viv with something he may not necessarily like, for the sake of filling the viv, defeats the object of the hobby! He should find something he really likes and does his research - if the viv doesn't suit, either return it or sell it on for the right stuff... or if the viv does suit the species he wants, then obviously keep it and adjust the setup accordingly
