Royal python

I have just bought a Royal python ( yes i will post pics very soon ) it is complete with rub and heat mat water bowl and hide. The rub is about 2 1/2ft in length and 7inch deep so quite large.

What i am looking to do is put the royal in a 3ft viv so i can have better control over the heating but what i wanted to know is do you think it is worth me doing this just now as the snake is new to me not settled in yet and will have to order the viv

Many thanks
Graham

heathster 06-03-2013 10:13 PM

Im putting my royal straight in a 3ft viv when i get it on the weekend.
As long as there are plenty of hides and cover they will be fine

I would do it soon as you can and get all the moving and stress over with in a short space of time then leave him to settle in for a few weeks. Pack out the viv with lots of hides/plants/corkbark etc so he gets to feel really secure quickly as he will know he has lots of cover and places to hide in near by should he feel the need to. Royals are all about security...get this down and you will have one happy/confident/good feeding royal who will be out exploring more often during the day as well as night ....coz he feels confident and safe in his enclosure : victory:

Royal

Hi Heathster,

Thats what i thought would be best to do instead of stressing the Royal out anymore than needs to

I have plenty of hides for him and can't wait to hold him but i know i will have to give it a couple of weeks to settle in first.

Hope all goes well with yours at the weekend.

Many thanks
Graham

Hi Artisan,

Thanks for that like i said to heathster i did think this would be the best thing saving stress on the snake i will get the viv ordered tomorrow on next day if not i will go and buy one from local pet shop.

What is your take on heating mat or lamp ?

Many thanks
Graham

heathster 06-03-2013 10:35 PM

Lamp.
I use a 100w infrared exo terra red bulb, used to have it on a dimmer stat but it doesnt need one as the temps are perfect without using it.
And thats in a 3ft vic so should work fine for you, just make sure bulbs are caged :)

Ceramic for a viv definitely. So much better. Guarded and statted obviously. Mats dont give a temp gradient throughout the viv and i wouldnt use a mat with a royal anyways in a viv as these IMO should be reserved for RUBs and smaller/younger snakes. A ceramic will give a lovely all over warm enviroment for the snake and he wont have to search for a mat that only gives off heat to whatever touches it...and have to stay on it just to keep warm. Instead he can go off on his jolly travels round the viv whilst keeping warm too :2thumb:

Hi Heathster / Artisan,

Many thanks for the advice i will get all my bits ordered up in the morning and hopefully have them for friday.

Anything else that you think i would be needing for the Royal before i order all this ?

Many thanks
Graham

heathster 06-03-2013 10:53 PM

Plenty of hides
Fake plants
Water bowl
Substrate (kitchen towel/aspen ect)
Ceramic bulb holder (if using ceramic bulb)
100w ceramic heat bulb OR 100w heat red bulb (red as they cant see the colour red very well so it can be left on all tge time and not affect thier day/night cycle)
Bulb cage/guard
Pulse stat (if using ceramic heat bulb) OR dimmer stat (if using heat bulb)
A couple of digital thermometers (ebay for less than £2 each) one at the warm end and one at the cool end

That should be everything you need

You will need a ceramic light holder (plastic one will melt/cause a fire) and this can be bought in a kit off ebay with the heat cable and plug included quite cheaply (i always get these off ebay) also you can get ceramic bulbs/guards on there to. i have used both branded ceramics and also the poultry ones on there......i haven't had to change a bulb in around 2 years and these are all cheaper then the shops (usually) : victory:

If you look around you should find the light fitting/cable and plug set for around a fiver. guards are bought seperately and come in different sizes depending on what wattage bulb youre using and for thermostats (pulse) the cheapest ive found are surrey pet supplies. Vivs i would look on SPS again or blue lizard reptiles/swell reptiles - one of them will be cheapest and blue lizard do free delivery if you spend over 50 squiddies. Plants/hides i would get from swell as they are cheapest i think but delivery isnt too much (bout a fiver) work it all out and weigh up if its cheaper to get from one place or bits and bobs from different ones : victory:

Artisan,

Is there a way to tell the age of a python ?

This one seems tiny to me and i am a little worried about it i know it could be stressing and i could be as well given i don't want anything to go wrong. I was told it was fed sunday on a large mouse but looking at it i dont think that has been the case.

Thinking of taking it to the vets for a once over

Many thanks
Graham

heathster 07-03-2013 10:30 AM

Theres no way to tell for sure, you can gemuess by size and weight butnit wont be affurate as they froq at different rates depending on how they have been feeding.
Vets is your best option, ask them to pop/probe it? If its a male they may be able to give you a rough idea of sexual maturity too

Hi Heathster,

I have just phoned the local vets and they dont specialise in reptiles but would give it the once over.

I do know its a male and just trying another couple of vets to see if they can help me.

I just want to make sure i am going to be feeding it what it should be fed.

Is there a good time to get the snake out for weighing ?

Many thanks
Graham

Artisan 07-03-2013 10:44 AM

It could well have fed and as its thurs now...the bump would only be visible for a day or 2.
With it being soooo small and young...make doubly sure you cram out the viv with lots of hides and places to hide and you should have no probs.
As heathster said - you wont be able to guess its age but if its super tiny then it will be no older then a few months providing its fed properly.
Sexing it can be done by someone experienced by probing or popping (if its young enough for popping) : victory:

Hi Artisan,

Thats what i thought about the food situation but large mice i thought these snakes were rat eaters ?

I know its a male snake so no need for popping going to nip down the town and get some more hides for him hopefully he will feel more secure.

God i cant wait till i get the viv and get it sorted out.

Many thanks
Graham

Some people do start babies off on mice but its best to get onto rats asap to save messing round when older and they are more set in their ways.
Dont do it right away....let him settle first and get around 3 feeds into him when he comes into your care...just so you know he is eating regularly, then you can start trying with rats. You can either just offer a rat thats had its head super heated in boiling water for a few seconds (this can make them REALLY want it lol) or you can get a mouse and defrost it with the rat and then rub the mouse all over the rat to scent it...doing this can make the transition a bit easier. Once on rats....they are usually fine : victory:

I suggested popping (if he is yoing enough) as you can tell a rough age by the maturity of his sexual organs.
As for feeding, he should be fed on something with equal girth to the widest part of his body

Hi Guys,

Once again thank you so much for the info as i think i am fretting just as much as he is. However he has just explored the rub he came in last night as i have covered one end with a dark towel and there is no lights on at the minute and he looks ok.

Think it might have something to do with the mrs cooking sasuage mmmmm.. As both snakes were sensing food i guess. :lol2::lol2:
Viv has been shipped so should be here tomorrow and most of my other bits have been shipped to which is good as i will be able to get him moved into his new home asap.

I went for the ceramic bulb and holder also ordered the pulse stat from surrey pets so that should be here saturday or maybe tomorrow so all is looking well.

Feeding I will stay on large mice until like you say three feeds have been done then wean him over to rats. the way you have advised. Dont want to order in to much food so will by food week in week out just now.

One more thing could you advise me on a good supplier of frozen food.

I will look into getting the probbing done like you say they can check the sexual maturity.

Many thanks again
Graham

Make sure you order the bulb guard too so he cant get near the bulb (you would be surprised that they will find a way up to it and a guard is a much needed bit of kit)
I get my frozen in bulk online and its only worth doing this if youre bulk buying as you pay for delivery. Your are best with just 2 snakes....buying what you need once a month from your lical rep shop : victory:

King Macs 09 08-03-2013 07:17 PM

Bulb Guard

Hi Artisan,

Thought i would make one as it would only cost a couple of pounds after watching a u tube video on how to do it as this will tied me over for starters and very simple to make.

But thanks for the reminder

Many thanks
Graham
