I'm not entirely sure what wood is best to use. You can use conti board, mdf, ply, marine ply, etc etc but I don't know which is best value for money. Take a look in the habitat section. Questions like this pop up all the time. They'll be able to help you out. Or PM Meko or my_shed. Both very informative on this subject and helpful chaps.

MDF seems to be the cheapest plus an extra 20% off always helps

the only thing about the conti board seems like its only the white one what comes in at 6 foot but then over 3 foot but is 15mm which I don't think is as good as 18mm

will give them a pm thanks again

MDF is fine and it's easy enough to paint - ie find matt white works best as an undercoat. Two coats and then whatever colour you want... and go for 18mm rather than 15 as there's bugger all price difference.

If you want to stain it then go for 18mm ply, which is £28 at B&Q for an 8x4.

Size wise, i usually get an idea of what size i want to build and work out the wood cuts from each sheet. Then use that to finalise the size.
For example, if you wanted a 4x2x2 viv then you need 2 sheets of 8x4, but if you knock a could of inches of the viv you can get it out of one sheet. So if you decide to go for a 5x2x2 you might find that you can get a 5x2x3 out of the same amount of wood.. etc

what would you say will last longer?

I was thinking about going a bit bigger 6-5 x 3 x 3 is it worth going that extra bit?

If I got for 5-6 x 2 x 3 I could just use conti board which would be easier

Ive read so much but has just made me more confused

hi if you end up getting 2 sheets of 8' by 4' sheets you will get a 5' x 3' x 2' viv out of them as i have just built one myself i wanted to go slightly deeper on it but that would of been a third sheet

I was looking for height as well as depth so as to make the fake rocks etc and still have loads of space

ply will last longer. Give it a varnish inside to protect the wood and do whatever you want to the outside so it matches the lounge.
The easiest way though is to work out how many cuts for the size you kind of want and then work out what size you can get without having loads of wastage.
