Default Garage conversion

Hi All,

I will be moving into a new house this summer and am thinking about converting a section of the garage into a reptile room (In fact I am not thinking about it , I am told I have to do it or they go....from the OH).

I have seen a few threads using the search tool (see someone does use it ) but I want to know if anyone has any particular pieces of advice (other than getting rid of the OH).

It will be a brand new double garage and I am planning to convert a quarter of it into the reptile room (not quite done the measurements yet so it may be a bit bigger). My initial thoughts are to build a small room in the rear of the garage with a door into the main garage that will be accessed via the main garage door. However I MIGHT put a side door into the reptile room direct through the garage wall (do i need planning permission for this???).

Any thoughts about what I need to do / think about would be greatly appreciated.
By the way my DIY skills are quite good but I am thinking of getting someone else to do the donkey work (like stud walls/ roof etc).

One last thing...... the new house has a legal covenant in it that states "not to keep any animals other than the usual domestic ones" ..... do you think snakes are a usual domestic animal ??

I don't think you'll need planning for an additional door to the garage, check with local planning office , quick phone call will get ur answer

I did my garage in feb last year and my reptiles have been in their since along with my rodents

I put a 1000w oil filled rad in their but it hasn't come on even in minus 2 temps outside

It's all insulated, plaster boarded and plastered etc

Let me know if you want me to ping you come building pictures

Ryan

Reps are less intrusive than cats and dogs so shouldn't be a problem

If my other half told me I had to build a reptile room, I would dance for joy and overrun the entire garage! Luckily, my partner loves reps, so I doubt we will haver that ultimatum.

My gut feeling would be that access through the side of the garage would be preferable, otherwise won't you have to open the big main door every time you go in?

I agree about the door...... not sure how difficult (or expensive that would be)

My alternative was a separate outside log cabin type affair but it would take up garden space and would probably cost more than converting a bit of the garage.

I think usually you only need permission to put a new door in if its a listed building, planning permission is usually for building extensions exceeding a certain size.

Keep us posted as next year me and my OH plan to move to a larger house and I would like to convert some of a garage.
