Default corn snake with mouth open...

ok.. kinda strange... first time its happened to me..

bought a breeding pair of corns a little while back.. and apparently they ahve always been kept together... they were kept in 2 vivs.. stacked ontop of each other.. with a hole cut between them...

anyway.. i decided that if i plan on breeding them in the future... gonna seperate them.. so a week or so ago.. i did.. blocked the hole.. and sorted them both out with a similar setup..

jsut went over to have a gander at them (i do it randomly all the time) and noticed she had ehr head out of her hide... and her mouth was open.. seemed strange.. so i opened the tank.. and she shut ehr mouth and went back in her hide... shes not normaly skittish when i go into ehr tank.. and when i removed her hdie she was fine... and the male has not done this :p

any ideas ?? or just ehr being a muppet :P

the temps are between 30-35 oC

peace

James

The temps are far too hot! I would be wanting to lower those for corns who need only up to 85 and not over 90 ( Kathy Love says 21 - 31 ) unless they can escape the heat at all?

82 degrees F for a corn on the warm side. The mouth open is likely to be caused by overheating!

I keep mine at 86F (30C) on the basking, 78-80F (25 ish ) on the cool side, 70-75F (21 - 23)at night. I would never exceed 90F (32) in a corn snake viv if it could be helped.

If the temp goes up to 35 and there is no cool side, that could be very damaging... I keep my hot side at 30, but there is a definite gradient and they are almost always in the hide on the cool side (25-27ish), although I do have a few females who like to bask.

since i split them.. my female spends alot of time in her hide.. but the male likes to sit in the warm side.. and goes in his hide when hes tired i assume :p

they seem ok now ... the female did regurge last nght... but thats because my mum (idiot knows nothing about snakes) decided to go in her tank and try and handle ehr... matter of hours after feeding :S she eats 2 rat pups every 7-10 days... and only regurged 1.. so not too worried

needless too say.. anything more and shell b off too the vets..

peace

James

p.s the female had a little respiritory problem a while ago.. and iw as told to turn up erh ehat a little bit.. ehnce the increased heat

There is a lot of difference between 30-35C, that is 86-95F. 95F is way to warm for a corn snake.

You should really be aiming for a cool end temperature of 75F-78F (24C-25C) and a warm end of 82F-86F (28C-30C) which will give the snake plenty of temperature gradient in which to thermoregulate.

Snakes will also regurgitate food when it is too hot.
