Default And here's why you need a bulb cage

One thing that annoys me more than "starter kits" that don't include Thermostats (but not as much as PPI calls) is when people ask if they need a bulb guard, or don't bother getting one at all, because you know, "it'll be alright".

Well, let me put it like this:

So just be be clear on this then: Yes, you do need a bulb guard, and no it won't be alright if you don't have one - it's only a matter of time.

But you know, if you need some further convincing, here's a tip: Go grab your bulb with your bare hand. I think you'll find yourself convinced in under a second

I see your post and raise you a floating Royal.

(Don't worry, the heat is reduced at night; and ignore the dangling electronics in her viv, none of them were connected to an output at this point).

The underside of mine during the day will usually still burn you but the sides are certainly not; at night it cools down considerably.

Is there a risk of burns to the snake if the underside gets hot enough to burn you?

Originally the red bulb was on a completely different circuit with a toggle switch attached to the outside meaning that I could switch it on in order to view the animal and then switched back off when I wasn't. I've since removed it as it's really not necessary to have an internal bulb for this purpose.

When it was in use it did have a bulb-guard and was only taken down the night before taking this picture.
